President Addresses Situation in Afghanistan

“We will not repeat mistakes of the past,” he said.

President Joe Biden gave an address from the East Room of the White House Monday afternoon to discuss the U.S. evacuation from Afghanistan. He said he would “not repeat the mistakes we’ve made in the past” pertaining to the three presidents who preceded him in dealing with the 20-year war.

“Our mission in Afghanistan was never supposed to have been nation-building. It was never supposed to be creating a unified centralized democracy,” the president said.

He said the U.S. should focus on terror threats where they exist and cited Somalia and the Arabian Peninsula among others. “Today, the terrorist threat is metastasized… I am adamant that we focus on the threats we face today in 2021, not yesterday’s threats.”

President Biden said American troops should not fight a civil war that the Afghan military will not fight. He said he stands “squarely behind” his decision to withdraw American troops “I am the president of the United States,” he said. “The buck stops here with me.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For insight and understanding for the president and his administration as they assess the situation in Afghanistan and respond.
  • For the additional troops sent to Afghanistan to help with the evacuation of Americans and vulnerable Afghans.
  • For the president and his national security team as they evaluate the intelligence issues surrounding the quick takeover by the Taliban.
